The Sports First Aid course is a great introduction to first aid in a sport and fitness environment. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of Sports Therapists, Group Exercise Instructors and Coaches who don't necessarily require a full 2 day pitch side first aid course.
The certificate entitles the candidate to be a First Aider for 3 years from date of issue. There are no pre-requisites to attend this course.
A minimum of seven contact hours in the classroom,
consisting of practical and theoretical
activities, plus some pre-course activity could be
•Safe best practice and awareness of current regulations
•Sports specific practical scenario training
•A systematic approach to incident management.
•Airway Management - safe airway positions & dealing with gum shields
•Return to play decisions following on field assessment using SALTAPS
•Recognition of concussion - use of Maddock's questions
•Soft tissue injuries, strains and sprains - when to and when not to use ice
•CPR Resuscitation procedures - single and multi-person scenarios
•What to put in your first aid kit
Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, along with a multiple choice question paper, and a
three year qualification will be issued to those who satisfy the criteria. In addition, the HSE and
HSENI strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of three
A maximum of 15 students can be accommodated on this course and all candidates must be a
minimum of 16 years of age to qualify.
